GOLD COAST, Australia - Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic defeated Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4 to win the Australian women's hard court championships here on Saturday. This was the Czech teenager's third WTA title.

Swiss Miss Martina Hingis faltered in her comeback tournament at the Gold Coast and went down 6-2, 6-7, 2-6 to Italian Flavia Pennetta in the semi final of the Mondial Women's Hardcourts tournament. The 25-year-old Hingis was playing her first tournament after three years.

After Amélie Mauresmo came back from behind to beat her compatriot Mary Pierce 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 in the WTA Championships final in Los Angeles, she became the first Frenchwoman to win the season-ending tournament. In a long-battle lasting three hours and six minutes, 26-year old Mauresmo's athleticism and determination tipped the scales in her favour.

Tool to provide instant replay for tennis umpires line calls

Tennis umpires will have a new tool to track the ball's trajectory so that they can rule on disputed line calls. The tool, called Hawk-Eye, will offer instant replays of the ball's movements at a tournament. The technology will be tested at the Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall from 29 November. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has recently approved the tool.
