Mike Ruddock resigns as Wales' national coach

Rugby story by Boris Webb, Thu, 16 Feb 2006 21:24:00 GMT

CARDIFF - Wales coach Mike Ruddock has tendered in his resignation just one year after leading the team to a Grand Slam. His action has shocked observers especially since this is the middle of the Six Nations campaign in which Wales lost to England and then overcame Scotland.

It is being reported that the main reason for Ruddock's shock departure is discontent among a few senior members of the rugby squad. But Steve Lewis, the Welsh Rugby Union chief executive has refuted rumors that a secret meeting between the players and him was what sealed Ruddock's fate, "As far as I'm concerned, there was no uneasiness in the camp with regard to Mike's coaching. I will also say that I have received no documentation from any player with regard to the coach and I have certainly not staged any meetings with the players," Lewis said.

It is being speculated that Australian Scott Johnson who is currently preparing for the Six Nations encounter against Ireland, would be asked to stay on permanently. Johnson had hinted that he would return home after the end of the current season so that he could live with his son, who has not shifted base to Wales. He is also unlikely to make any decision until the Ruddock furor is laid to rest.

"I have a lot of sadness for Mike, but it's a professional sport and life goes on. As far as my own position is concerned, I just want to concentrate on the Ireland game," John said yesterday.

"Nothing has changed in terms of my position and I am not going to talk about my contract negotiations. I have issues but I will continue talking with my employers and they will be the first to know." Gareth Edwards, one of Wales' rugby stars has expressed shock at Ruddock's untimely departure, "He was the dynamo that made all the other parts work. This is certainly a blow to the Welsh set-up. His contribution has been absolutely immense," he said.
