Injured Venus thrashed by Clijsters

Belgium's Kim Clijsters put on a super show in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami as she thrashed Venus Williams 6-2, 6-1 to take the title in just under an hour.

Williams went into the match as favourite on home soil, having won her last 15 contests.

However, Clijsters quickly took control and took advantage of a clearly struggling Williams, who was wearing strapping on both legs.

The delighted victor said after her success: "She's a great competitor, a great athlete and one of the best that women's tennis has ever had.

"I knew I had to come out here and play well.

"I was very happy with the way I was able to keep playing throughout the whole match.

"Whenever I had opportunities to step it up, I just really tried to do that. I was just really making sure that I was going for the lines and just kept her under pressure from there onwards."

The defeated Williams added: "Overall I'm really happy with the tournament. Unfortunately, today I didn't win the match, although I felt like this is a match I could win.

"Unfortunately I made it a little bit too easy. Next time around I'll play better."
