Warne backs England appointment

Cricket story by sport.co.uk, Mon, 12 Apr 2010 09:25:25 GMT

Australian spin legend Shane Warne believes England have made an excellent addition to their coaching staff in compatriot David Saker.

Saker was unveiled as England's new fast-bowling coach earlier in the week as a replacement for Ottis Gibson.

Gibson left his role with the England and Wales Cricket Board in February in order to take the reins as head coach of his native West Indies.

"He is a fantastic bowling coach and he will definitely help England," said Warne.

"He will be excellent for the England dressing room. He can be in-your-face at times, he is pretty aggressive, but he is absolutely spot-on.

"I'm sure the England bowlers will appreciate him and all the England players will enjoy having him around."

Saker has never coached at international level but Warne fully expects his former Victoria team-mate to take to make a seamless transition.

"I was privileged enough to play with him and captain him a lot for Victoria. He was a wonderful player to captain. He was a team man and one of the first names pencilled in at selection," he added.

"He was a very, very good bowler and he is a fantastic coach. He really understands the game and bowling very well and he is passionate about the game of cricket."
