Britain announce indoor team

Athletics story by sport.co.uk, Fri, 26 Feb 2010 09:13:30 GMT

Great Britain have announced their squad for the World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar next month.

Defending triple jump champion Phillips Idowu is a possible gold medal hope for Team GB despite making a slow start to the season.

But after jumping 17.25 in the Aviva Grand Prix last weekend, he has once again demonstrated why he is one of the favourites to retain his crown in the Gulf state.

Dwain Chambers has the chance to go one better in the 60-metres after, sharing the silver medal with Kim Collins in Valencia two years ago.

Jessica Ennis is hoping to shake off her ankle complaint that has forced her out of events at Sheffield and Birmingham recently but she remains a big hope in the pentathlon.

UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee said: "This competition gives athletes an opportunity to gain championship experience on a global level, the endurance athletes especially have taken this chance with lots of new faces in those disciplines.

"The team is slightly bigger than I would have anticipated at the start of the winter season which positively shows the depth of the pool of athletes we have.

"We have names which will make the podium if they perform to potential and there is always room for outsiders."

The team for the event in Doha, from March 12-14:
