Khan sets sights on Malignaggi

Boxing story by sport.co.uk, Tue, 23 Feb 2010 09:13:32 GMT

Amir Khan has revealed that New Yorker Paulie Malignaggi is in his sights for a May 15 showdown.

The fight would mark Khan's US debut with the bout lined up for Madison Square Garden in Malignaggi's hometown.

Rumours of his next opponent have varied since the Bolton man joined up with Golden Boy Promotions after his split with Frank Warren.

Marcos Maidana and Juan Manuel Marquez are two who have been earmarked as potential candidates, but it is thought the preferred option is Malignaggi.

Speaking to reporters, Khan said: "May 15 is the date that I have, the fight will be in America and opponent - we are looking at Malignaggi.

"We were looking at Marquez, who pulled out, so it's Malignaggi up to now and we want to hear what he thinks about the fight.

"I want to fight him in his hometown (New York) and beat him in his hometown in front of his own people."

The 23-year-old has made one mandatory defence of his WBA light-welterweight title with a 76-second stoppage against Dmitriy Salita.

'Here in America. We are not impressed by an over hyped fighter who furthers his over hyped career by fighting small, aging boxing legends with his cheating headbutt tactics.

Here in America. We respect only those who are willing to fight legitimate threats. Please tell Amere Con to stop making excuses not to fight Marcos Maidana, and just fight Marcos Maidana, or just stay in the UK.

Just for record, Dimitriy Salita is not one the best fighters out there. '
