Hirvonen reigns in Swedish snow

Motorsport story by sport.co.uk, Tue, 23 Feb 2010 09:02:32 GMT

Finland's Mikko Hirvonen started the new World Rally Championship season in style with a superb victory at Rally Sweden.

The 29-year-old Ford ace, who was edged out in last season's title race by a single point by the imperious Sebastien Loeb, got one over on his Citroen rival in the snow, ending the rally with a comfortable 42.3second cushion.

After making a perfect start to the campaign, Hirvonen said: "After losing the title last year by a point I knew I had to win more, rather than settle for consistent points finishes.

"It was a big win for us and I want many more this season.

"It's the first time I've won the opening round of the year. I tried to be more aggressive from the start in all aspects of my performance."

Six-time World Champion Loeb added: "I start each rally with victory as my aim, but if I feel that winning isn't within my grasp, I prefer to bag the maximum number of points rather than risk an accident.

"I didn't think I was the favourite for this event and I found myself up against a rival who drove a perfect rally."
