Yardy pens Sussex extension

Cricket story by sport.co.uk, Wed, 23 Dec 2009 09:28:47 GMT

Sussex captain Mike Yardy has put pen to paper on a new three-year contract, having enjoyed mixed fortunes during his first year in charge at Hove.

The 29-year-old all-rounder guided Sussex to the Pro40 Division One and Twenty20 Cup titles, while the Sharks also reached the final of the Friends Provident Trophy.

However, the campaign was clouded by Sussex being relegated to the second division of the County Championship.

Yardy told the club's official website: "I'm very excited to have agreed a new contract and I'm looking forward to helping improve the club and achieving our goals for the 2010 season."

Professional cricket manager Mark Robinson added: "Michael led the team brilliantly in his first term as captain.

"He's only going to grow as a leader and, as a player, he is a massively important cog in both our four and one-day aspirations."
