Toni availability offers Suker punch for Wenger

Football story by sport.co.uk, Wed, 23 Dec 2009 09:25:15 GMT

Bayern Munich President has confirmed that Italian international and former Fiorentina front man Luca Toni will leave the club in the January transfer window. Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal are the latest club to be linked with a move for the free agent in the January transfer window after the Frenchman admitted in recent months that his side would consider another attacking option in the winter window following Robin Van Persie’s injury. The Gunners have been reportedly linked with moves for West Ham’s Carlton Cole, AC Milan’s Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh, and Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko. Arsenal's Arsene Wenger only brought in Ajax's Thomas Vermaelen, while letting Emmanuel Adebayor, Amaury Bischoff, and Kolo Toure leave the Gunners.

A move for 32-year-old Luca Toni would mirror Wenger’s move for Croatian forward Davor Suker. Following the departure of Nicolas Anelka to Real Madrid Wenger signed Thierry Henry from Juventus and snapped up the World Cup golden boot winner on a free transfer. Suker played in the UEFA Cup Final against Galatasaray and scored 8 goals in 22 games during the 1999-2000 campaign at Highbury.

Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeness told DSF Doppelpass that Bayern are keen to put the issue to bed once and for all, however, they are yet to receive any offers for the 32-year-old.

"If necessary, we will require no transfer fee [for Luca Toni]," he told DSF Doppelpass.

"We want to have peace on this issue.

"We still have no concrete offer, although we are willing to lend him on a free transfer or free."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been coy on his transfer dealings as the Frenchman prefers to manage his business behind closed doors. The Frenchman's January 2009 signing Andrei Arshavin beieves Arsenal are on the verge on great things:

Arsenal's Russian playmaker said: “Now we are in a good position, but we must improve. We are waiting for our injured players to come back because it’s impossible to always play without five or six players. I hope they come back quickly.

“This season is very interesting and any team can beat any team. We beat Liverpool recently, but that is not enough. We must beat teams like Manchester United and Chelsea when we play them again.”
