Ferrari chief: Schumacher will return

Motorsport story by sport.co.uk, Tue, 22 Dec 2009 08:46:39 GMT

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has revealed that Michael Schumacher is highly likely to return to Formula One next year with Mercedes.

The seven-time world champion has been given permission to end his consultancy role with Ferrari in order to make a racing return.

Mercedes, who took over the Brawn GP team in November to confirm their return to Formula One, are believed to be keen to boast an all-German driver line-up with Schumacher the focal point.

The 41-year-old had planned to make a comeback with Ferrari last season to replace the injured Felipe Massa only for a neck injury to put an end to his plans.

"I spoke to him (on Wednesday) and he told me there is a very strong possibility but that it's not 100 per cent decided," revealed di Montezemolo.

"A guy called Michael Schumacher told us at Monza (in September) he would renew his (Ferrari) contract. And it looked like his career would finish with Ferrari.

"But then there's another one who looks like him, 40, 41 years old, German, same name and decided to do a new career.

"Everybody in life can do what they prefer and I understand that there is somebody at 41 years who wants to try again.

"So I think it's possible this twin, another Michael Schumacher, same age, same capability, some determination and spirit, will drive

for Mercedes next year."
