Salita shattered by Khan

Boxing story by sport.co.uk, Mon, 07 Dec 2009 09:29:39 GMT

Amir Khan produced a devastating display to knock challenger Dimitry Salita out in the first round of their WBA light-welterweight title fight in Newcastle.

Khan took just a minute and 16 seconds to retain his title, having unleashed a barrage of blows right from the first bell.

Afterwards, a delighted Khan said: "It was very explosive. We had too much power for this guy.

"After the first shot I could see his legs buckling and I just had to take my time. I knew he was going."

A stunned Salita added: "I'm a slow starter and I guess that's one of the technical mistakes I made.

"He started faster than I anticipated. I was never really hurt - just kind of stunned - and the ref stopped the fight basically.

"He has very quick hands. With the first knockdown I just didn't see the punches coming and I guess that's what led to the subsequent knockdowns."
