McIlroy eyes The Open

Golf story by sport.co.uk, Fri, 26 Jun 2009 01:50:35 GMT

The Open at Turnberry is three weeks away and rising star Rory McIlroy is getting more confident by the minute. McIlroy finished in the top 10 for the first time in a Major on Monday as he ended his US Open campaign on a high and with The Open looming, he hopes it is a sign of things to come. The 20-year-old hit a closing 68 at Bethpage Black on Monday to finish 10th - just six strokes behind winner Lucas Glover.

It was an impressive showing from McIlroy, who was making his US Open debut, but before he can switch his attentions to the Turnberry showdown, he has a second European Tour title to fight for at the BMW International in Munich this Thursday.

"It's another good performance in a major this year and gives me a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season," said the world number 16, who came 20th on his first appearance at The Masters in April.

"I feel as if I've got the game to contend in majors now and try and compete to win them. The Open is a big target of mine.

"It was a really solid week and I can take a lot from it. It was a great week - and a long one."
