Golf story by sport.co.uk, Fri, 26 Jun 2009 01:50:34 GMT

Retief Goosen is the overnight leader in the BMW Open in Munich after firing an opening round of 64 to finish on eight under par. The South African, one of the later starters, made eight birdies to overtook clubhouse leader Richard Finch of England, who ended up two shots behind at six under par.Goosen decided to change putters after finishing outside the top ten in the US Open earlier this week and was rewarded with eight birdies. He said: ""I feel like I've been playing okay, but it's not quite been happening, so it's nice to get off to a good start this week. I tested a new putter in the pro-am here and it felt sort of good, so I decided to give it a try. It would have been nice to make the same putts at the US Open, where I holed nothing."

Finch had made a terrific start, with three birdies and an eagle and finished in second place, one stroke ahead of nine players on five under and 11 players on four under, including home favourite Bernhard Langer. The German was playing with Rory McIlroy, who shot a disappointing 71 to finish one under and seven off the lead.
