Haye bites back in Klitschko war

Sports story by sports.co.uk, Tue, 23 Jun 2009 10:05:16 GMT

David Haye has landed the latest blow in his ongoing feud with Wladimir Klitschko by claiming the IBF and WBO world heavyweight champion is so boring he sends him to sleep. Haye was set for a title shot against Klitschko before suffering a back injury that ruled him out of a showdown in Germany. Ruslan Chagaev stepped in to replace Haye but his previously undefeated record was shattered on Saturday as Klitschko stopped him in the ninth round. After the match, Klitschko claimed he was ready to knock Haye out but the Londoner and former undisputed cruiserweight champion has bit back.

"Wladimir sold 65,000 tickets off the back of the fact he was going to fight me. None of his fights prior to that have come anywhere close to that because he's a boring, un-entertaining fighter," Haye said.

"It's just unfortunate that I got the injury in training but he just went out and did his usual thing. For me, he's Wladimir 'The Cure For Insomnia' Klitschko. He couldn't be more boring.

"He had the guy beat from round one, but he let it go on for nine rounds. He didn't knock the guy out, the guy retired in his corner and it's that sort of performance, which just shows why he hasn't got a very big fan base."

Klitschko will fight mandatory WBO challenger Alexander Povetkin next and Haye says he will fight older brother and WBC champion Vitali if it means getting a crack at Wladimir later on in the year.

"For me, to be the number one in the world you've got to beat both the Klitschko brothers. His brother hasn't got any obligations and he's free in September so we'll see if that's a possibility," Haye added.

"If it's Wladimir first or Vitali first it doesn't bother me. I've got to fight both of them anyway so I don't care which one comes first."
