Calzaghe: time for Hatton to quit

Boxing story by sport.co.uk, Mon, 01 Jun 2009 12:39:11 GMT

Joe Calzaghe believes the time has come for Ricky Hatton to hang up his gloves. Hatton suffered a painful defeat to Filipino Manny Pacquiao earlier this month but remains tight lipped about his future. But Calzaghe, who retired in February with a proud record of 46 wins from 46 fights, believes Hatton's best days are now behind him.

The Welshman told the Daily Star Sunday: "It was a devastating loss against Pacquiao and I think it's time for him to retire.

"The most important thing in boxing is your health. I watched the fight and Ricky took some heavy shots - he just didn't seem to turn up on the night.

"A lot of people will be telling Ricky what to do, but only he knows what is right."

However, Calzaghe reckons Hatton may be tempted by one last fight infront of his adoring fans.
"Maybe he'll want one last fight in Manchester to get a win," he said.
