Disgraced Montgomery admits: I won gold after taking drugs

Athletics story by sport.co.uk, Fri, 22 May 2009 09:28:56 GMT

Disgraced athlete Tim Montgomery admitted he won a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics after taking drugs. Montgomery is currently in prison on fraud and heroin trafficking charges and the IOC said they will take the necessary actions after the sprinter's admission. The American said he took testosterone and a human growth hormone before the Sydney Games in 2000, where he won a 4x100m relay gold medal.

He said: "I have a gold medal that I didn't get with my own ability."

The athlete never tested positive for drugs but was banned for two years and had his 100m world recorded erased from the record books after he was caught up in the Balco (Bay Area Laboratroy Co-Operative) scandal.

Balco supplied illegal performance-enhancing drugs to a number of athletes in the run-up to the Games and an IOC spokeswoman said it would look into the case as part of its ongoing investigation into Balco's misdemeanours.

Montgomery has been asked to voluntarily hand back his gold medal but the fate of his 2000 relay team-mates is uncertain.
