Athletics story by sport.co.uk, Fri, 22 May 2009 09:28:42 GMT

Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius is expected to make a full recovery following head and facial injuries sustained in a boating accident. Pistorius underwent surgery in Johannesburg on Sunday and is in a stable condition in intensive care after Saturday's accident. The 22-year-old South African double amputee won three golds at the Paralympics in Beijing last year.

"His brain is functioning normally," said Anchen Laubcher, the principal medical officer of the emergency service which evacuated Pistorius.

"He will soon be discharged and taken home to make a full recovery."

And Pistorius' agent Peet van Zyl added the sprinter may return in time for the World Championships in May.

"Oscar will be back on the track sooner rather than later," said Van Zyl. "He has sustained no leg, arm or rib damage."
