Chambers wins 60m Gold in Turin

Athletics story by sport.co.uk, Fri, 22 May 2009 09:28:37 GMT

Dwain Chambers stormed home to a gold medal in the 60 metres at the European Indoor Championships in Turin in a time of 6.46 seconds. The shamed sprinter went fastest in the heats and the semi-finals, when he broke the European record in 6.42secs, and he did not have to surpass that time to clinch a clear win.
The victory could mark a turning point in the sprinter's career as he strives to rebuild his reputation following a positive drugs test in 2003.

After serving a two-year ban, Chambers was unable to compete in the Beijing Olympics and will not be allowed to run in London in 2012 under British Olympic Association rules.

However, having served his suspension the 30-year-old should still find plenty of doors open to him, including in the World Championships in Berlin later this year.

Chambers' British team-mates Simeon Williamson and Craig Pickering both missed out on a medal, Williamson slowly away after causing a false start before failing by 100th of a second to take bronze.

Pickering was also slugglishly out of the blocks and finished sixth, while Italian duo Fabio Cerutti and Emanuele Di Gregorio completed the podium positions.

It is Britain's second gold after Mo Farah won the 3,000m on Saturday
