Stage one of the Tour de Romandie is won by Michael Albasini

On Wednesday, Michael Albasini kept unrolling his quite impressive season after the veteran Swiss managed to win stage one of the Tour de Romandie.

Albasini, who dared to finish in the top 10 of three challenging hilly classics – La Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Amstel Gold Race the previous week – eventually added a seventh Tour de Romandie​ to his palmarès.

Australain tean Orica-Scott’s Albasini crossed the finishing line ahead of Diego Ulissi from Team UAE Emirates as well as Movistar’s Jesús Herrada.

Fabio Felline, prologue winner retained the leaders’ yellow jersey, though the UK’s Alex Dowsett, who had turned to be second heading into the stage, suddently fell down the classifications.

On the very final climb the Movistar rider was eventually dropped by the breakaway because the conditions worsened.

Thursday’s stage two involves more than 161km to Bulle where Italian Felline is expected to defend an eight-second advantage over, the German Quick-Step Floors rider, Maximilian Schachmann  as well as Spaniard Herrada.
